Today in my non-Western philosophy class, during meditation, I suddenly felt extremely happy and giddy from all the deep breathing. I had actually begun to smile and even shed tears of joy.
I've been extremely stressed lately with all of the school work, problems with the magazine, work on the newspaper, and just life in general. Most of the time, my usual breaths are relatively shallow and I never really take in the full capacity of my lungs. While actually having a moment of despair as I thought about the work I ended up shouldering for the magazine this week (I have to re-write two people's stories because one dropped the class and the other is lacking sources and not in the Associated Press style on top of having to complete my own story. Though this doesn't seem like much, there is also the matter of finishing huge projects for other classes), I put all of it aside for the in-class meditation. As I let go of all thoughts except counting the seconds between inhaling and exhaling, after a few minutes I almost started to giggle uncontrollably. Anyone ever done this before? |

Whoa. No. But if it helped you relax that much, please share how you managed to do that. I need a little relaxation right about now...

Ah, meditation is wonderous that way. I've never been stressed enough to get that big of a reaction, but I vaguely know the feeling you described. Oh yeah, for the magazine story, when do you need the pictures by? I'm rather busy all this month, but if you need them asap I can do my best to work something out... PM me about it or whatever.

When you walk hand-in-hand with Death, you notice that Life is on your side. Until you fall over. (Last edited by Logos on 10-12-06 03:42 AM) |

Originally posted by Elara I PM'd you the photographer's number, and I'll have to call her again to make sure she gets in touch with you and WhiteRose. Many thanks to the two of you and Tom for your help on this story. I still need to make all these calls for the other two stories. Grumble, grumble, grumble. Well, I can do this. I'm just going to make sure I cut loose this weekend. I had a very unreasonable, self-destructive thought yesterday before that class: that I would probably have better grades if I just took up smoking. Since smoking is such a stress reliever and serves as a cheap escape for those who do it, and I need to get out and do things to work off the stress and don't get to the reading and working on assignments early enough, it would probably just be more convenient to take up smoking. What a stupid thought. I think it stemmed from all of the propaganda I've been fed about my line of work--that journalists are among the occupations that smoke the most cigarettes and consume the most alcohol. I wouldn't doubt it being true since my office is filled with smokers and binge drinkers. |

Well, you see, you're increasing your oxygen intake into your brain and that is causing endorphins to form, so yes, it is possible, but I don't know how 'getting high' on drugs feels so I cannot compare the two.

yes yes you certainly can get high from breathing, it IS oxygen intake and YES it is like drugs. infact they have oxygen bars for exactly that reason, furthermore it is harmless and even good for you to breathe as deeply as you can for as long as you can stand for a while each day. your lungs will expand, you will lose weight, feel better, and when you speak you will have a louder clearer more full tone of voice. (these are things 8 years of breathing excercise teaches you)
............and another thing...dont start smoking, all that good stuff you learned goes to crap immediatly |

A question. Are you talking about the joy of mere existance, or the joy of breathing? Because of the latter, I am cursed to not know of it.

There wasn't a specific joy to which the tears were tied, really. Tears simply welled up from all of the happiness I was suddenly experiencing while undergoing the high.
If there were anything to really attach the tears to perhaps it came with the discovery of peace amid the stress and hub-bub that is life. |
